Burst pipe? Do this first
1. Turn off the water. Close the main valve (Haupthahn), usually near the water meter in your flat, in the bathroom or kitchen, or in the basement.
2. Keep water away from electricity. If water reaches sockets or lights, switch off the fuse (Sicherung) for that area.
3. Take photos of the damage for your landlord and insurance.
4. Call us and tell your landlord or building management (Hausverwaltung).
Smell gas? Do not use light switches or phones inside, leave the building and call the Berlin gas emergency line 030 7872 72 or 112. We do not do gas work.
Renting in Berlin: who pays the plumber?
If you rent, the landlord is normally responsible for the pipes and drains and pays for repairs. The exception is damage you caused yourself, for example wet wipes or nappies flushed down the toilet. In a real emergency such as a burst pipe you can call a plumber straight away. Tell your landlord or Hausverwaltung as soon as possible and keep the invoice. Many buildings also have their own emergency number, often posted in the stairwell. This is general information, not legal advice.
